Alien Stage — the duel

Round 1 of Alien Stage pairs Mizi and Sua for the opening duel of the whole series. They are girlfriends. The arena requires one to sing against the other. Mizi wins, Sua is eliminated. The show never quite recovers from this — every song about grief, every subplot about survivor's guilt, every character study of Mizi is a reply to it.

Sua's posthumous Bon Bon Jellyfish Planet and Mizi's Part.2 solo MirroR are the two songs that pull the duet apart from either side — Sua imagining a soft world that could not exist, Mizi returning to the shared vanity mirror alone.

Zombie Stage — the duel, again, dead

Zombie Stage is a different world, not a sequel. There, Mizi and Sua are high-school friends who audition together and fail; Mizi passes the second audition alone, becomes an idol, and drifts. Sua brings her clematis and Mizi hands the bouquet to a staff member. A cigarette, a slap, a hug, a panic attack — Mizi runs, and a zombie bites her. Sua watches it happen and does not move. Then she breaks into the building where Mizi is being kept and kisses her, infecting herself on purpose so they cannot be separated. They sing Candy Scar against each other in an underground circus for an audience of uninfected humans who pay to watch.

Mizi wins by one point. Sua is laid on a slaughtering table and her arm is cut off and sold, over an acapella pass of Little Bunny. The clematis is the prop that carries across: in Alien Stage it is the song they sing to each other, in Zombie Stage it is the bouquet Mizi gives away.
